Join Headliner, The Bobby ‘Blackhat’ Walters Band and a line-up of award-winning blues musicians on Saturday, January 27 as they shake the walls of the John E. Hillert Auditorium. Featured artists scheduled to perform at the Blues Festival include Ruth Wyand, Jon Spear Band, and Tom Dikon & the Jukes Revival. Tickets are $25/$20/$15; Box Seats are $35.
Bobby "BlackHat" Walters (Robert Walters) is recording artist, harmonica player, vocalist, songwriter and actor from Cleveland, Ohio and has been playing harp for over 40 years. Bobby is a retired U.S. Coast Guard Commander with 27 years of distinguished service which included serving as Military Aide to the President and being awarded the Coast Guard Medal for Heroism.
Blues Guitarist Ruth Wyand raises the bar in the ‘guitarist with foot drums’ genre with her intricate picking style augmented by her alternating thumb bass, bottleneck slide, multiple foot drums, and raw blues vocals. Ruth generates enough power to fuel a full band explosion. Ruth is an award-winning fingerpicker, slide player, songwriter, and music historian from Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Beating a path to and from Juke Joints and Jazz clubs, Ruth performs at festivals, universities, and clubs across the US, UK, Europe, Kuwait, and New Zealand.
Nominated by Blues Blast Magazine for the prestigious “Best Live Blues Recording of 2016” award, the Jon Spear Band has received numerous favorable reviews and extensive airplay both in the U.S. and internationally. They were a 2016 WAMMIE nominee for best Blues/Traditional R&B Recording (Washington Area Music Association), and have opened for nationally touring acts including Debbie Davies, Delbert McClinton, the Iguanas, the Chris Duarte Group, and Memphis Gold. They've also appeared at the 31st and 33rd International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. Although their ages span several generations, the band's members share a common determination to use their exceptional talents to create unique and memorable music.
Tom Dikon & The Jukes Revival and friends recall a bygone era of the blues while breathing new and refreshing life into it. Virginia based singer-harmonica player Tom Dikon’s harmonica chops are right up there with the best on the current scene. In 2010 he won the regional International Blues Challenge (IBC), and competed in the 2011 IBC in Memphis. His highly-acclaimed acoustic trio performances with vocalist/guitarist Jon Vallet and vocalist/bass player Rich Ridolfino offer their signature fluid, energetic and inventive style of playing. The fact that he has a cool and smooth vocal delivery doesn’t hurt either.
